Who knows what lurks in… er.. my basement?

Last week while rummaging through boxes in my basement I discovered something I have no memory of buying or owning, but which has apparently been following me in secret through several moves going back to the early 90s.

The box is a little beaten up, but the contents are still in pristine condition:

It appears to be a totally d6-based, relatively simple rule system for a Middle-Earth based RPG – complete with cardboard minis, fold-out maps, and a starter adventure!

I owned some of the old Middle Earth Role Playing game books back in the 80s. Never did find a group interested in playing them, but being the Tolkien geek that I am I read through them all. The overall impression I had of those was that they were essentially a fairly complex generic fantasy system over which someone had sprinkled a light coating of Tolkien Flavor Crystals (TM). Apparently, if the guy casting the fireball spell has a Sindarin name and is walking through a place called the Old Forest, it counts as Middle-Earth.

I don’t think this system is related to that one at all, so I’m tempted to try it out for a few sessions… but at the same time, I’m a little put off by the idea of damaging something that’s in such good condition after 25+ years.

Anyone have any experience with this particular game?
