Gaming has fallen to the wayside just a little with the holiday season going on (and with me giving in and buying the latest Assassin’s Creed game), but we’ll be getting back into it soon. There will be a little bit of RPG-related loot under the tree this year, too:
I’ve given in to the lure of a vast volume of ready-to-go, low-prep-time adventures and decided to dabble again in the D&D world. Rather than picking up multiple hardbound volumes right away, I decided to grab the Starter Set and see how that goes. Since I’m aware of many of the class options outside the ones presented in the starter, I may consider “hacking” it by letting players put together custom characters rather than the pre-rolled ones it comes with. On the other hand I might just have them use the pre-rolls to get the hang of the game a little before moving on to the full versions and just starting new characters there with the benefit of a little knowledge from the practice run.
My daughter asked for an ottoman with some storage space for her room this year. We found one that was inexpensive and meets her needs, but I decided it looked entirely too plain sitting by the Christmas tree with just a ribbon on it. So it needed to be modified.
Lastly, though this isn’t directly pen-and-paper-gaming related: My wife and I both played City of Heroes from the week it got started. I burnt out after a couple of years and only occasionally logged back in once they switched the the free-to-play model, but she stuck with it until the tearful night they turned out the lights in the server room.
This year I found a gift I think she’ll like – a COH-themed sweatshirt (which is, I’m sure, totally unauthorized and unofficial)! Hopefully it will go over well.
